When people first consider one of my kits, they often ask:
“But what do I do with it when I’m done?”
It’s a fair question. In-the-hoop embroidery isn’t framed behind glass, so the usual “hang it on the wall and forget it” approach isn’t always the best fit. Plus not everyone has wall-space or wants to bang in another nail for a small project.
These pieces shine when you treat them as part of your home styling. I love displaying them in styled vignettes. They’re easy to move, and it’s fun to change them out seasonally.
This approach also fits with the current slow decorating trend in which the idea is to curate the pieces in your home gradually–choosing them for personal meaning rather than quickly finishing the job with decor from the local home goods shop.
Adding embroidered pieces to styled vignettes on your shelves, your banquets, your cabinets can add both texture and theme. You’ll get soft fibers alongside books, plants, or candles, as well as motifs that echo the season or the story you want your home to tell.
Here are my five top styling items to pair with embroidery in a vignette:
A small stack gives your hoop a foundation and adds instant character (and sometimes color). Bonus: you can change the titles to match the season or mood.
A cool blue design feels grounded by an oversized coffee-table book with blue spine. The subject connects with the owls in Snowy Owl Grove. Snowy Owl Grove | Jacobean
The stationery desk is made cozier with two pieces stacked on the coffee table book “Dreamscapes.” Not only does the subject fit with the sleeping cat, the pretty imagery on the top of the book complements the pieces well. Catnap | Patchwork
A touch of green always brightens a vignette. No plant handy? A bunch of parsley in a glass works beautifully.
A crystal sugar bowl holding an ivy complements a stitched Tea Party scene.
A rustically potted miniature fern sits alongside Moths.
Pieces that add variety in height keep the eye moving–and enable you to position pieces for interest. Mixing textures of glass, wax, and wood adds visual interest.
Tall candle stands and a raised glass jar bridge the height between smaller hoops and a larger sampler. A small pedestal lifts one design just enough to keep the balance. Fall Squirrel Sampler | Pumpkins & Owls | Spooky House
This woodsy vignette layers tall bottles, pedestal, rough-hewn candle pillar, and botanical candle—pieces that echo the theme while adding height variety. Potions Pantry | Moths
Think pumpkins in fall, seashells in summer, or a teacup in winter. Little nods like these connect your embroidery to the season.
Vintage school motifs shine when styled with classroom relics. Here, School Days sits alongside a brass-based globe, antique abacus, and a cup of pencils on a pedestal. School Days
Felt acorns and pumpkins are small fall-themed pieces that sit alongside Squirrels & Acorns.
Combine two or three stitched pieces and suddenly it feels like a curated collection rather than a single project on its own.
Patchwork shows how versatile embroidery can be. Layer it with smaller pieces with home and floral themes, vary the height with books and a pedestal, and don’t forget a small accent like a trinket dish. Patchwork | May Flowers Stick & Stitch | Houses Stick & Stitch
Here’s a vingette that brings all of my favorite accent pieces into play while displaying three finished pieces perfect for the fall season. The motifs and colors all mix nicely. The decor pieces include: book, plant, pedestals and height-adding pieces. Rogues’ Gallery | Mushrooms | Squirrels & Acorns
