This collection of hand embroidery kits and patterns for the Christmas season includes designs with both modern sensibility and vintage charm.

All of the hoop-art designs are available as either full kit or fabric pattern. The ornaments are provided on “washaway” sticky-backed fabric.

1. Mistletoe Farm

Mistletoe Farm evokes vintage farm stand signage with text that includes

  • a scripty “you pick ’em”
  • peppermint striped “Christmas Trees,” and
  • a banner listing species of fir, pine, and spruce

In the foreground of Mistletoe Farm is a burst-filled and retro-styled tree, while a vintage blue pickup is more subtly rendered in the background.

2. Joy

Joy is a mandala styled holiday wreath with whimsically styled trees and reindeer. You’ll add satin and chain-stitched garlands to the trees then top them with a trio of lazy daisies. Notice the poinsettias strung between reindeer antlers and the greens circling the center message of “joy.”

3. Noel

Noel is inspired by vintage decorations and holiday cards. The “NOEL” letters evoke retro ceramic letters I grew up with, and both the candle scene and the bells could have come straight from glittered greeting cards.

You’ll use a variety of stitches to render this design. Lazy daisies fill the letters of NOEL, each of the bells has a different straight-stitched fill, and the dripping wax on the candles is chain stitched. Top the candles with satin-stitched flames and use the whipped back stitch for pink halos.

4. Holiday Folk

Inspired by Scandinavian folk art embroidery, Holiday Folk gives you embellished birds and reindeer to fill with a variety of ornamental stitch combinations. Small accents of tree, greens, stars and ornaments fill out this Christmas hoop-art.

5. Christmas Mantle

Embroider an iconic Christmas morning scene of trees and gifts around the fireplace, of stockings hung with care, of a “merry” garland with this Christmas Mantle design.

The kit colors give you a Victorian color scheme with a pinkish-red and turquoise blue to go with traditional greens and golds. Want to go more traditional? Order the printed fabric instead of the full kit and choose your own colors.

6. Ursa Duet

Ursa Duet isn’t explicitly a holiday design. . . and yet–it can be! The triangle trees, gingerbread cottage, and golden stars make it so. It’s a design that can go straight through December and into February.

The bears are stitched in a mass of small straight stitches, and the trees are rendered in textured backstitch and wagon wheel. The many cottage embellishments get you working in a variety of stitch combinations including a chain-stitched archway, lazy-daisy half flowers, and French-knotted flowers filling the window-box.

7. Winter Cabin

With Winter Cabin, you’ll stitch a snow-covered A-frame surrounded by bare trees.

The pale wood of the house and the two-toned snow contrast brilliantly with the boldly colored trees and the three pops of red: skis and two cardinals.

Whether a winter cabin is your dream retreat or a place where you already spend time, this is a relaxing project, and snow lovers will love putting it on display during the Christmas holidays and throughout the snowy months of January and February.

8. Joy Ornaments

This pack of Christmas motifs includes nine 3″-high ornaments: 3 trees, 3 reindeer and 3 wreaths with “joy” in the center. They are printed on 8.5″ x 11″ sticky-backed wash-away fabric. Cut out the design you’d like to use leaving a narrow border. Peel the the backing and adhere to fabric. Embroider over the pattern and your original item. When you’re done, soak briefly in warm water to wash away the water-soluble fabric and you’re left with an embroidered design on your clothing or linens.

They’ll look great embroidered on white wool felt or a stiff canvas. Back the ornament with a second layer of fabric, stuff if you like, and finish the edge with blanket stitch.
